Setting a goal for your social media presence

You know that using social media for your organization is important, but do you know why you're doing it? Maybe you jumped onto different sites because everyone else was doing it and you didn't want to get left in the dust. You reasoned it was better to be there than not, but you're not really sure what you're doing.

If you're just getting started with social media, or your sites need a refresh, there is one place you absolutely need to start, and that is with a clearly-defined goal.

I break goal setting down into two parts. Part one is a broad, overall goal or mission statement for your social media presence. Whether your goal is to raise brand awareness or create a great following, set a personal goal that will guide everything you do on social media. Write this goal out as a mission statement and put it somewhere to remind you of your focus.

Part two is to set priorities for your social media content. These priorities can include things like "keep all information correct and up-to-date" and "proof-read before posting." But they should always include engagement with your followers. This should always be your top priority on social media because it is, after all, social.

Engagement is often the lost art of social media as businesses focus on stats and sales over interaction with followers. But engagement is what keeps people coming back because they know they'll be heard and responded to. Look at social media as a connection point and remember to comment back, thank, follow, and "like."

Once you have your goals and priorities set, you can get started with great content creation and conversation. If you have questions about this, please contact me, I would love to help!
