Using Twitter for your business or organization

All too often I see businesses and organizations recycling content from other social networking sites (like Facebook) on Twitter. Recycling means pushing a post from site A (Facebook) onto site B  (Twitter), often automatically when the two sites are synced.

If there's one thing you should know about social networking it's this: each site is unique and should  be used uniquely. That means it should have its own fresh content, not another site's leftovers. Recycling content ultimately shows laziness and a disinterest in followers unique to that site.

I encourage clients to treat each social networking site like a separate entity. You can share the same information, but it should be tailored to the site you're using. You want your content to stand out, to catch attention, and to fit within the site on which you're sharing it.

So, when it comes to sharing content on Twitter, you should be creating posts that are unique to Twitter. That means making your tweets into simple, short bites of info with a shortened (Bitly) link to your corresponding content. Use your limited number of characters to attract attention and capture the interest of individuals who are scrolling through their Twitter feed. Always keep your text in a complete thought or sentence (something that rarely happens when pushing posts through from Facebook).

Also consider using dynamic graphics and images to capture visual interest, but be sure to share them from Twitter. Images pushed through from Facebook or Instagram will not appear in the Twitter feed. They will simply show as a link, not capturing the attention that a visible image will.

Finally, remember to interact with your followers. Favorite or reply to their tweets, even if they aren't
directed to you. And if they tweet directly to you, always respond. Honor loyal followers by following  them back to show that you appreciate their attention.
